The Route: Boston → Vermont → New Hampshire → Maine
Days 1–3: Vermont — The Heart of Fall Foliage
From Boston (or New York), head north into Vermont — the state most synonymous with autumn colour.
- Stowe — The "autumn capital" of New England. Drive the Stowe Mountain Road (Route 108) through Smugglers' Notch for jaw-dropping colour. Camp at Gold Brook Campground ($35–$50/night).
- Woodstock — Postcard-perfect Vermont village. Visit Billings Farm, walk the covered bridge, and drive the Pomfret Road (one of the most photographed autumn roads in America).
- Route 100 — Vermont's "most scenic highway" runs the length of the state. The stretch from Stowe south to Killington is autumn perfection.
- Campground pick: Emerald Lake State Park ($22/night) — lakeside sites surrounded by blazing maples.
Days 4–6: New Hampshire's White Mountains
Cross into New Hampshire for dramatic mountain scenery wrapped in autumn colour.
- Kancamagus Highway (Route 112) — Widely considered the #1 fall foliage drive in America. 34 miles through the White Mountains with numerous pull-offs and short hikes.
- Franconia Notch State Park — The Flume Gorge boardwalk surrounded by autumn colour is iconic ($18 entry). Camp at Lafayette Place Campground ($25/night).
- Mount Washington — Drive (or ride the cog railway) to the highest peak in the Northeast (6,288ft). On a clear day, you can see five states and Canada.
- North Conway — Charming outlet shopping town with excellent restaurants and the Conway Scenic Railroad fall foliage train.
Days 7–9: Maine's Acadia National Park & Coast
Head east to Acadia National Park — where autumn colour meets the crashing Atlantic Ocean.
- Cadillac Mountain — The first place in the US to see the sunrise October–March. Drive (or hike) to the summit for 360° views of autumn islands and ocean.
- Park Loop Road — 27-mile drive past Thunder Hole, Jordan Pond, and Sand Beach with brilliant fall colour.
- Blackwoods Campground ($22/night, reserve via recreation.gov) or Seawall Campground ($22/night). Both fill instantly for October.
- Bar Harbor — Fresh lobster, blueberry pie, and cozy harbor-side dining after a day of hiking.
Days 10–14: Coastal Maine & Cape Cod
- Camden, Maine — "Where the mountains meet the sea." Hike Mount Battie for harbour views with autumn colour.
- Kennebunkport — Classic New England coastal village, George H.W. Bush's summer estate, and incredible seafood.
- Cape Cod (optional) — If returning to Boston, loop through Cape Cod for beach walks and cranberry bogs. Nickerson State Park ($22/night) is a beautiful base.
