Melbourne has the famous hook turn — unique to the CBD where you turn right from the left lane at certain intersections. CityLink and EastLink are tolled electronically. Tram tracks in the inner suburbs require extra caution. The Great Ocean Road has some narrow sections — take your time with a larger motorhome. Speed cameras are widespread.

The Melbourne Campervan Guide
Everything we get asked before a first hire out of Melbourne — where the depots actually are, what the roads are like, where you are allowed to sleep, and a couple of routes that work.
Picking up your van
- Melbourne depots are concentrated in the northern and western industrial suburbs — the Campbellfield, Tullamarine and Laverton corridors — with airport shuttles from Melbourne Airport. Avalon pickups are rare, so check which airport your booking assumes.
- Melbourne is the cheapest major Australian city to start a campervan trip in shoulder season because the fleet is large and relocations flow through it. If your dates are flexible, compare a Melbourne start against a Sydney one before you book flights.
- Winter pickups here are genuinely cold. Confirm the van has a diesel heater or at least a 240v heater and a powered site booked, particularly if you are heading towards the high country or Tasmania.
Driving around Melbourne
- CityLink and EastLink are tolled and free-flow. Melbourne also has hook turns in the CBD grid, where you turn right from the left lane — avoid the CBD in a motorhome entirely and you will never have to deal with one.
- Trams have absolute priority. You must stop behind a tram when its doors open unless there is a raised platform, and you cannot pass it on the left. Tram tracks are slippery in the wet.
- Default urban limit is 50km/h, 40km/h in strip-shopping and school zones, and 100 to 110km/h on freeways. Victoria runs a very large fixed and mobile camera network with a low tolerance.
- The Great Ocean Road is narrow, winding and has coach traffic. A 6-berth motorhome will fit but the drive takes far longer than the map suggests — allow at least two days from Torquay to Warrnambool, not one.
Where you can camp
- No street sleeping in inner Melbourne. Use Melbourne BIG4 at Coburg or the parks at Braeside and Frankston for a first or last night near the airport run.
- Victoria has an excellent network of low-cost Parks Victoria campgrounds, but almost all of them need to be booked online in advance, even midweek. Turning up unbooked in summer will not work.
- The Great Ocean Road corridor is the tightest camping market in the state between Christmas and the end of January. Book those nights before you book anything else.
