Driving Tips
Tasmania's roads are scenic but often narrow and winding, especially on the west coast. Road surfaces can be uneven in remote areas. Wildlife is very active at dusk — wombats, Tasmanian devils, and wallabies are common on roads. The speed limit is generally 100km/h on open roads and 50km/h in towns. Fuel stations are less frequent on the west coast — fill up when you can.

Everything we get asked before a first hire out of Hobart — where the depots actually are, what the roads are like, where you are allowed to sleep, and a couple of routes that work.
Picking up your van
- Hobart campervan depots are near Hobart Airport in Cambridge, on the eastern shore about 20 minutes from the CBD. Britz, Maui, Apollo and Cruisin' Motorhomes all operate from this area, with free airport shuttle transfers.
- Alternatively, if you are arriving on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry from Melbourne, you can pick up in Devonport (northern Tasmania) and do a full island loop ending in Hobart, or vice versa. One-way fees between Devonport and Hobart are usually modest ($50–$150).
- Tasmania is smaller than most people expect. You do not need a huge motorhome — a compact 2-to-4 berth handles the narrow roads better and is easier to park at trailheads and coastal lookouts.
Driving around Hobart
- Tasmania has no toll roads. The speed limit on open highways is generally 100km/h and 50km/h in towns — but many country roads are effectively 80km/h because of winding terrain.
- Roads on the west coast (Strahan, Queenstown, Cradle Mountain approach) are narrow, winding and can be wet year-round. Allow more time than the map suggests, especially in a motorhome.
- Wildlife is extremely active at dusk and dawn. Tasmania has one of the highest rates of roadkill in Australia — wombats, wallabies, Tasmanian devils and pademelons are all common on roads after dark. Drive carefully and avoid night driving where possible.
- Mountain roads to Cradle Mountain and Mount Field can require chains in winter (June to August). Check conditions at tasmania.com/road-conditions before heading into alpine areas.
Where you can camp
- Hobart council does not permit sleeping in vehicles on city streets. Hobart Airport Tourist Park is convenient for a first or last night, and Barilla Holiday Park (just north) has good facilities.
- Tasmania Parks and Wildlife manages dozens of campgrounds in national parks. A Parks Pass ($40 per vehicle for 8 weeks) covers entry to all national parks and is essential — every major attraction is in a park. Book ahead for Freycinet, Cradle Mountain and Bay of Fires in summer.
- Free camping is limited in Tasmania compared to the mainland. The best budget option is the network of free rest areas along the major highways, but most are basic (no power, limited water) and many restrict stays to one night.
