Rainbow Beach does not have campervan depots. Travellers pick up their campervan in Brisbane (240km south, 3 hours) or Hervey Bay (90km north, 1.5 hours). Brisbane is the most common pickup point as it's the nearest major city with all brands available. The drive from Brisbane via the Bruce Highway and Rainbow Beach Road is straightforward.
Driving Tips
Rainbow Beach Road is a sealed 60km turnoff from the Bruce Highway at Gympie — suitable for all vehicles. The town itself is small and easy to navigate. IMPORTANT: You cannot take a standard 2WD campervan onto K'gari (Fraser Island). The island requires a 4WD vehicle and a Vehicle Access Permit. Many travellers park their campervan at Rainbow Beach and take a 4WD day tour to K'gari instead.
