Practical Info for Auckland
Pickup & Depot Info
Auckland campervan depots are concentrated in Mangere and East Tamaki, both within 15 minutes of Auckland Airport. Britz, Maui, and Apollo share a large depot on Richard Pearse Drive. Most operators provide free airport shuttle transfers. The Inter-Islander ferry terminal in Wellington is about 650km south if you're heading to the South Island.
Driving Tips
New Zealand drives on the left. Auckland's motorway system can be congested during rush hours (7–9am, 4–6pm). Tolling on the Northern Gateway Toll Road is electronic. Outside Auckland, roads are generally excellent but often single-lane in rural areas. Allow extra time for winding mountain roads. Give way to vehicles already on the roundabout.
Caravan Parks & Campgrounds
Auckland has several excellent holiday parks. Takapuna Beach Holiday Park is the most central with beachside camping. Avondale Motor Park is good for a first night. North Head Holiday Park in Devonport has harbour views. For freedom camping outside Auckland, ensure your campervan has the new Green Self-Containment Warrant (green windscreen card + rear sticker). Download the CamperMate app to find certified spots.
