Why Start in Brisbane?

Brisbane is the perfect launchpad for an East Coast road trip. With easy access to the Gold Coast, Noosa, K'gari (Fraser Island), and the Whitsundays, it's Australia's most popular campervan starting point. The subtropical climate means great conditions year-round. Brisbane has the highest concentration of campervan depots in Australia — more than a dozen brands operate within 15 minutes of the airport, which means more competition and better prices for you.

Top Things to Do Near Brisbane

Must-visit attractions and experiences within easy driving distance of Brisbane — perfect day trips and stopovers for your campervan adventure.

K'gari (Fraser Island)

3.5 hours north

World's largest sand island — stunning freshwater lakes, 75-Mile Beach, and ancient rainforest. 4WD required on the island.

Gold Coast

1.5 hours south

Famous surf beaches, theme parks (Dreamworld, Sea World, Movie World), and the lush Gold Coast Hinterland.

Noosa & Sunshine Coast

1.5 hours north

Pristine beaches, Noosa National Park coastal walk, Eumundi Markets, and excellent restaurants.

Australia Zoo

1 hour north

Steve Irwin's famous wildlife park — crocodile shows, koala encounters, and over 1,200 animals.

Glass House Mountains

1 hour north

Dramatic volcanic peaks rising from the coastal plain. Short hikes with rewarding panoramic views.

Practical Info for Brisbane

Pickup & Depot Info

Most campervan depots in Brisbane are located near Brisbane Airport (BNE) in the Eagle Farm and Pinkenba industrial areas, just 15 minutes from the CBD. Major brands like Apollo, Britz, Maui, and JUCY all have depots within a few kilometres of each other. Some operators offer free shuttle transfers from the airport or CBD. If you're flying in, you can usually pick up your campervan the same day.

Driving Tips

Brisbane uses electronic tolling on the Gateway Motorway, Clem7 Tunnel, Airport Link, and Go Between Bridge. Set up a visitor toll pass before you drive. Parking large campervans in the CBD is difficult — head straight out of the city. The Bruce Highway north and Pacific Motorway south are both excellent for campervans. Speed limits are strictly enforced with cameras.

Caravan Parks & Campgrounds

Brisbane has several excellent caravan parks: Brisbane Holiday Village (Eight Mile Plains) is closest to the city centre. Aspley Acres Holiday Park is well-maintained with great facilities. For a beachside option, head 30 minutes east to Redland Bay. The Sunshine Coast (1 hour north) has dozens of parks perfect for your first night.

Best Time to Travel

Brisbane enjoys a subtropical climate making campervan travel excellent year-round. The dry season (April–October) offers perfect driving conditions with clear skies and temperatures around 20–25°C. Summer (December–February) is warm and humid (28–32°C) with occasional afternoon thunderstorms, but the beaches are incredible. Winter (June–August) rarely drops below 10°C at night, making it one of Australia's best year-round campervan destinations.

The Brisbane Campervan Guide

Everything we get asked before a first hire out of Brisbane — where the depots actually are, what the roads are like, where you are allowed to sleep, and a couple of routes that work.

Picking up your van

  • Most Brisbane campervan depots sit in the industrial belt north-east of the CBD, between the airport and Eagle Farm, rather than in the city centre. Nearly all of them run a free shuttle from Brisbane Airport terminals, but you usually need to book that shuttle when you book the van.
  • Depots typically open around 8am to 4pm on weekdays with shorter Saturday hours and no Sunday pickups at the budget end. If your flight lands late Sunday, plan a night in Brisbane and collect the van Monday morning — it is cheaper than paying an after-hours release fee.
  • Allow a full hour for handover on your first campervan. You will walk the vehicle for damage, get shown the gas, water and grey-water systems, and sign the bond authority. Rushing this is the single most common cause of a disputed excess claim later.

Driving around Brisbane

  • Queensland drives on the left. The Brisbane inner-city road network uses several toll tunnels — Clem7, Legacy Way, AirportlinkM7 and the Gateway Motorway — and they are all free-flow with no cash booths. Ask your rental brand how tolls are billed; most pass them on with an admin fee per toll.
  • The default urban speed limit is 50km/h unless signed otherwise, 40km/h in school zones during posted hours, and 100 or 110km/h on the Bruce Highway. Larger motorhomes are still legal at those limits but are far more comfortable at 90 to 95km/h.
  • Queensland has a minimum passing distance for cyclists — 1 metre under 60km/h and 1.5 metres above it — and you are allowed to cross a centre line to give it, when safe. Fines apply.
  • If you are heading north in summer, watch the flood-depth markers. Never drive a campervan through moving floodwater; the vehicle is high-sided, light on the rear axle and floats far earlier than a car.

Where you can camp

  • Brisbane City Council does not permit sleeping in a vehicle on public streets in most suburbs. Use a caravan park or a designated camp — Brisbane Holiday Village at Eight Mile Plains and the parks around Redcliffe and Moreton Bay are the usual first-night options.
  • Head an hour out and free or low-cost council camps open up around the Somerset and Lockyer valleys. Most require a self-contained vehicle with an onboard toilet, so check what your van actually has before relying on them.
  • National parks in Queensland require a permit booked in advance through the Queensland Parks website, and popular sites in school holidays sell out months ahead.

Trips that start in Brisbane

Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast and Noosa

4 to 5 daysAbout 300km return

The easiest first trip out of Brisbane, and the one we get asked about most. Short driving days, sealed roads the whole way, and plenty of powered sites.

  1. Day 1Brisbane to Bribie IslandNinety minutes north. Shake the van down somewhere close before you commit to distance.
  2. Day 2Bribie to MooloolabaBeachfront caravan parks, a proper surf beach and an easy walk to dinner.
  3. Day 3Mooloolaba to NoosaStop at the Eumundi markets if it is a Wednesday or Saturday. Noosa National Park is free to walk.
  4. Day 4 to 5Noosa to Brisbane via the hinterlandReturn through Maleny and Montville for the Glass House Mountains lookout.

Brisbane to Cairns coastal run

14 days minimumAbout 1,700km one way

The classic Queensland drive. Doable in ten days but rushed; two weeks lets you stop properly at the Whitsundays and Mission Beach.

  1. Days 1 to 3Brisbane to Rainbow BeachGateway to K’gari. The barge crossing needs a 4WD, so most campervans park up and take a tour.
  2. Days 4 to 6Rainbow Beach to Agnes Water and 1770The last surf beach heading north and a good place to slow down.
  3. Days 7 to 9Airlie Beach and the WhitsundaysLeave the van at the park and take a boat day. Book the sailing trip before you arrive in peak season.
  4. Days 10 to 12Townsville to Mission BeachMagnetic Island is a short ferry hop; Mission Beach is where the rainforest meets the reef.
  5. Days 13 to 14Mission Beach to CairnsDetour inland to the Atherton Tablelands for waterfalls and cooler nights.
