Noosa & the Sunshine Coast
Noosa is the polished, easy-going start to the trip — a national park right on the edge of town, a river mouth made for paddling, and some of the best beach walks in Queensland.
Where to park in Noosa
Noosa's Hastings Street area is busy and tightly controlled, so don't try to free-camp there. Base yourself at a holiday park instead:
- Noosa River Holiday Park and the council-run river parks — powered sites walking distance to the water.
- Boreen Point / Lake Cootharaba — quieter, cheaper, and a beautiful spot 30 minutes north.
- For day parking, use the Noosa Junction and Noosa National Park car parks early — they fill by mid-morning in peak season.
Must-do in Noosa

K'gari (Fraser Island): The Overnight Tour Sweet Spot
K'gari — the world's largest sand island — is the highlight of the whole trip, and it's the classic example of where you park the van and jump on a tour. Here's why: the island is pure soft sand, so standard hire campervans are not allowed and aren't insured for it. You'll need a guided 4WD tour or a dedicated 4WD hire and a vehicle access permit.
Where to leave your campervan for an overnight K'gari tour
The two gateway towns both have secure parking so you can leave the van and travel light:

Byron Bay & the Northern Rivers
Cross into New South Wales and the pace drops another gear. Byron Bay is all lighthouse sunrises, surf breaks and hinterland markets — but it's also the trickiest place on this trip to park a campervan.
Where to park in Byron Bay
Byron enforces overnight-parking bans hard, and several car parks have height barriers that block tall vans. Do it the easy way:
- Stay at a holiday park in Byron, Suffolk Park, Brunswick Heads or Lennox Head — book well ahead in summer and over Easter.
- Use the paid day car parks on the edge of town and walk or cycle in.
- Never sleep in the van on the street in Byron — fines are steep and rangers patrol nightly.
Must-do in Byron Bay
Walk to the Cape Byron Lighthouse (Australia's most easterly point), surf at The Pass, and kayak with dolphins in the bay.
