Everything we get asked before a first hire out of Darwin — where the depots actually are, what the roads are like, where you are allowed to sleep, and a couple of routes that work.
Picking up your van
- Darwin depots line Stuart Highway in the Winnellie and Berrimah light-industrial area, about 15 minutes from Darwin Airport. Apollo, Britz and Maui all operate from this strip, and free shuttles from both the domestic and international terminals are standard.
- Darwin is Australia's number-one hub for dry-season (May to October) campervan travel. Availability tightens rapidly from about April onwards — book at least two months ahead if you want a specific vehicle for winter.
- The fleet here includes more 4WD campervans than most cities because so many travellers head to Kakadu, Litchfield and beyond. If your plan includes unsealed roads, make sure you book a vehicle that covers them in the rental agreement, not just in the brochure.
Driving around Darwin
- The Northern Territory has some of the highest default speed limits in Australia — 130km/h on the Stuart Highway between Darwin and Alice Springs. However, large motorhomes are more comfortable at 100 to 110km/h, and road trains on this corridor can be 53 metres long.
- During the wet season (November to April), roads can flood with little warning. Kakadu's Arnhem Highway and Jim Jim Falls road are often cut for weeks. Always check nt.gov.au/driving/road-conditions before setting out.
- Wildlife is a serious hazard, especially at dusk and dawn — kangaroos, water buffalo and wild cattle. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit every waterway north of Katherine. Never swim, wade, fish or camp at the water's edge unless a sign explicitly says it is safe.
- Fuel stops between Darwin and Alice Springs (1,500km) include Katherine, Mataranka, Daly Waters, Tennant Creek and Ti Tree. Never pass a fuel stop with less than a quarter tank.
Where you can camp
- Darwin city does not permit overnight vehicle camping on streets. The closest park is the Discovery Parks Darwin, about ten minutes from the depots on Stuart Highway.
- Kakadu National Park has powered camping at Cooinda and Jabiru. Bush campgrounds (such as Muirella and Mardugal) are unpowered and need to be booked through the Parks Australia website. A Kakadu park pass is $40 per adult and valid for seven consecutive days.
- Litchfield National Park is an easy day trip or overnighter from Darwin. Wangi Falls campground is the most popular (powered and unpowered sites), but Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole are worth the unsealed detour.
