Practical Info for Airlie Beach
Pickup & Depot Info
Airlie Beach does not have major campervan depots — most travellers pick up in Brisbane or Cairns and drive to Airlie Beach as part of the East Coast route. The drive from Brisbane is approximately 1,100 km (12-13 hours over 2-3 days), while Cairns is 620 km north (7-8 hours). One-way hires between Brisbane and Cairns (stopping at Airlie Beach) are the most popular option.
Driving Tips
The Bruce Highway is the main route to Airlie Beach, with a 25 km turnoff at Proserpine. The road is sealed and well-maintained. Watch for sugar cane trucks between Mackay and Proserpine during crushing season (June-November). The Airlie Beach main street has limited large vehicle parking — use the large car park near the lagoon or the Whitsunday Sailing Club area for campervan-friendly parking.
Caravan Parks & Campgrounds
BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort is the closest holiday park to central Airlie Beach, with a pool, waterslide, and powered sites from $50/night. Island Gateway Holiday Park is a solid budget option with mountain views. Airlie Cove Resort has waterfront powered sites. For a quieter option, Flametree Tourist Village (10 minutes south) is surrounded by tropical gardens.
