Why Start in Broome?
Broome is Western Australia's tropical pearl — a remote outback town where the red Kimberley earth meets the turquoise Indian Ocean. Famous for its 22-kilometre Cable Beach, camel rides at sunset, and the gateway to the spectacular Gibb River Road, Broome is the ultimate destination for adventure-seeking campervan travellers. It's also the start (or end) of the legendary Perth to Broome coastal road trip.

Practical Info for Broome
Pickup & Depot Info
Broome has a small number of campervan depots. Apollo and Britz/Maui operate seasonal depots (typically May–October during the dry season). Availability is limited compared to major cities, so booking well ahead is essential. Some travellers prefer to pick up in Perth and drive the 2,200km north. One-way hires from Perth to Broome (or Darwin) are popular but attract relocation fees of $500–$1,000+.
Driving Tips
The Great Northern Highway from Perth to Broome is fully sealed and suitable for all campervans (2,200km, allow 3–4 days of driving). North of Broome, the Gibb River Road is unsealed 4WD-only — do NOT attempt it in a 2WD campervan. Fuel stops can be 200–300km apart in the Kimberley — always carry extra water and fill up at every opportunity. Road trains (up to 50 metres long) are common — give them plenty of room.
Caravan Parks & Campgrounds
Cable Beach Caravan Park is the most popular — right on Cable Beach with powered sites from $55/night. Broome Vacation Village is a quieter option with good facilities. Roebuck Bay Caravan Park has waterfront sites. In peak dry season (June–August), parks book out weeks ahead — reserve early. Free camping options are very limited near Broome.

Best Time to Travel
The dry season (May–October) is the only practical time to visit Broome by campervan. Days are warm (28–33°C), nights are pleasant (15–20°C), and rainfall is near zero. This is peak tourist season, so book accommodation and vehicles early. The wet season (November–April) brings extreme heat (35–40°C), monsoonal rain, high humidity, cyclone risk, and many roads become impassable. Most campervan depots close during the wet season.
How Much Does Campervan Hire Cost in Broome?
Campervans $100–$200/day due to remote location. Limited seasonal availability (May–October only). Perth to Broome one-way fee: $500–$1,000+. Campground costs: $45–$70/night. Fuel: $1.70–$2.10/L. Book 3–6 months ahead — depots close in wet season.
