Pickup & Depot Info
Adelaide campervan depots are located near Adelaide Airport in the western suburbs (Mile End, Thebarton, Richmond). Apollo, Britz, and Maui operate from this area. JUCY has a depot on Sir Donald Bradman Drive. Free airport shuttle transfers are available from most brands. The depots are all within 15 minutes of the airport.
Driving Tips
Adelaide's roads are well-maintained and relatively uncrowded compared to Sydney and Melbourne. The South Eastern Freeway has a gradient-slowing requirement for heavy vehicles — use low gear. Wine region roads (Barossa, McLaren Vale) are narrow and winding. If heading to the Flinders Ranges or outback, carry extra water and fuel. The Stuart Highway to Alice Springs is excellent but remote.

Everything we get asked before a first hire out of Adelaide — where the depots actually are, what the roads are like, where you are allowed to sleep, and a couple of routes that work.
Picking up your van
- Adelaide campervan depots cluster in the western suburbs around Mile End, Thebarton and Richmond — all within 15 minutes of Adelaide Airport. Apollo, Britz, Maui and JUCY operate from this corridor, and most run free airport shuttle transfers.
- Adelaide is often overlooked as a pickup point, which means pricing can be sharper than Sydney or Melbourne, particularly in autumn and spring. If you are planning a Great Ocean Road trip, compare a one-way Adelaide-to-Melbourne hire against a Melbourne return — it is sometimes cheaper and lets you drive the coast in the better direction.
- Depots open standard weekday hours (8am to 4pm), with limited Saturday availability and no Sunday pickups at most brands. Plan accordingly if your flight arrives on a weekend.
Driving around Adelaide
- Adelaide is one of the easiest Australian capitals to drive in — a grid layout, little congestion outside peak hours, and no toll roads anywhere in South Australia.
- The South Eastern Freeway climbing out of Adelaide toward the Adelaide Hills has a mandatory low-gear requirement for heavy vehicles on the descent back into the city. A loaded motorhome counts — follow the signs and use engine braking, not just the foot brake.
- If you are heading to the Flinders Ranges or beyond, fuel stops thin out. Fill up at Quorn or Hawker and carry extra water. The road to Wilpena Pound is sealed; beyond that, many outback tracks require a 4WD and are excluded by standard rental insurance.
- Kangaroo Island requires a ferry from Cape Jervis (about 90 minutes south of Adelaide). Most standard campervans are allowed on the ferry, but check your rental agreement for KI access — some budget operators restrict it.
Where you can camp
- Adelaide council restricts overnight vehicle camping on city streets. Adelaide Shores Holiday Village at West Beach is the best first-night option — beachside, powered sites, 15 minutes from the airport depots.
- South Australia has an excellent network of low-cost national park campgrounds. Most cost $10–$15 per vehicle per night and are booked through the Parks SA website. Popular spots in the Flinders Ranges and along the Limestone Coast sell out in school holidays.
- The Barossa and Clare Valley wine regions have several caravan parks and farm stays with powered sites — a good base for tasting without the worry of driving back to Adelaide.
