Why Start in Perth?

Perth is the gateway to Western Australia's epic road trips and one of Australia's best-value campervan hire hubs. Drive north along the Coral Coast to the Pinnacles, Kalbarri, and Ningaloo Reef at Exmouth, tour the world-famous Margaret River wine region to the south, or take on the legendary Perth-to-Broome journey along the Indian Ocean. As Australia's most isolated capital, Perth offers uncrowded highways, endless coastline, and campervan depots just minutes from the airport — making it an ideal launchpad whether you have a long weekend or several weeks to explore.

Top Things to Do Near Perth

Must-visit attractions and experiences within easy driving distance of Perth — perfect day trips and stopovers for your campervan adventure.

Home of the famous quokkas — cycle around the island, snorkel crystal-clear bays, and spot wildlife.

Margaret River

3 hours south

World-class wineries, surf breaks, limestone caves, and gourmet food producers.

Pinnacles Desert

2.5 hours north

Thousands of ancient limestone pillars rising from golden sand in Nambung National Park.

Ningaloo Reef (Exmouth)

12 hours north (road trip)

Swim with whale sharks and manta rays on Australia's other great reef — more accessible than the GBR.

Wave Rock

4 hours east

A 15-metre-high natural rock formation shaped like a perfect ocean wave — 2.7 billion years old.

Practical Info for Perth

Pickup & Depot Info

Perth campervan depots are located in Redcliffe and Kewdale, both near Perth Airport. Apollo, Britz, Maui, and Star RV operate from Redcliffe. JUCY and Spaceships have depots nearby. The domestic and international terminals are served by free shuttle transfers from most operators. Allow 45–60 minutes for the pickup process.

Driving Tips

Western Australia is vast — distances between towns can be enormous. Always carry extra water (at least 4L per person per day for outback trips). Fuel stations can be 200–300km apart on northern highways. Road trains (triple-trailer trucks) have right of way — give them plenty of room. The Perth to Broome drive is 2,200km — plan carefully. Flies can be intense in outback WA — a fly net is essential.

Caravan Parks & Campgrounds

Perth Central Caravan Park is closest to the CBD. Discovery Parks Perth Airport is convenient for a first night. For Margaret River, BIG4 Taunton Farm Holiday Park has stunning vineyard settings. RAC Exmouth Cape Holiday Park is the go-to for Ningaloo Reef trips.

Best Time to Travel

Perth has a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers (December–March, 30–38°C) and mild winters (June–August, 10–18°C). Best travel months are March–November. Summer is too hot for outback trips but perfect for the south-west. The Coral Coast (Exmouth, Ningaloo) is best March–November. Wildflower season (August–October) is spectacular.

The Perth Campervan Guide

Everything we get asked before a first hire out of Perth — where the depots actually are, what the roads are like, where you are allowed to sleep, and a couple of routes that work.

Picking up your van

  • Perth campervan depots are mostly in the Kewdale and Welshpool industrial belt, roughly 15 minutes from Perth Airport and connected by free shuttles. A few budget operators are closer to Fremantle. All of it is well-signed, but double-check which depot you are heading to — Perth is a sprawling city and Uber across it is not cheap.
  • Perth is the single biggest hub for relocation deals in Australia, especially vehicles heading north to Broome or Exmouth that need to come back. If your dates are flexible by a few days, ask about relocation pricing before you pay full rate — savings of 50 to 90 percent are common in autumn.
  • Allow at least an hour for handover. WA campervans often have long-range fuel tanks and dual-battery setups fitted for outback travel — make sure you understand the auxiliary power system before you leave the depot.

Driving around Perth

  • Western Australia has no electronic tolls anywhere in the state, which makes it the cheapest state to drive long distances. Speed limits on rural highways are generally 110km/h.
  • Distances in WA are genuinely enormous. Perth to Broome is 2,240km, Perth to Exmouth is 1,250km. Plan your fuel stops carefully — some stretches in the Pilbara and Kimberley have 200 to 300km between service stations.
  • Road trains up to 53 metres long operate on WA highways. Give them plenty of room, never overtake when you cannot see well ahead, and pull over onto the shoulder if one approaches from behind on a narrow road.
  • Wildlife is a major hazard at dawn, dusk and night — kangaroos, emus and cattle. Locals avoid driving after dark on rural roads and you should do the same in a campervan.

Where you can camp

  • Perth metro councils prohibit sleeping in a vehicle on public streets and patrol popular spots around Cottesloe and Scarborough. Use a caravan park for your first night — Discovery Parks Perth Airport is five minutes from the depots.
  • Once you are out of the metro area, WA has excellent free and low-cost camping. DPaW (Department of Parks and Wildlife) campgrounds along the south-west coast cost around $15 a site. The further north you go, the more free roadside rest areas appear.
  • National park entry in WA requires a day pass or an annual Holiday Park Pass. If you are visiting three or more parks, the annual pass pays for itself quickly. Book ahead for Cape Range (Exmouth) and Karijini — they sell out in peak season.
