Off the Beaten Track in WA
Western Australia is the 4WD adventure capital of Australia. With over 2.6 million square kilometres of varied terrain — from the red gorges of the Pilbara to the ancient Kimberley landscape — this state offers some of the most rewarding off-road experiences on the planet.
For campervan travellers wanting to venture beyond the sealed highway, a 4WD camper hire from Perth opens up a world of adventure that's inaccessible to standard vehicles.
Route 1: Gibb River Road (Kimberley)
Distance: 660 km | Duration: 5–7 days | Difficulty: Challenging
The Gibb River Road is Australia's most famous outback track, cutting through the heart of the Kimberley from Derby to Kununurra. Along the way, you'll discover hidden gorges, Aboriginal rock art, and swimming holes of crystal-clear water surrounded by ancient red cliffs.
Must-stop gorges include Windjana Gorge (freshwater crocodiles bask on the rocks), Bell Gorge (arguably the Kimberley's most beautiful waterfall and swimming hole), Manning Gorge, and El Questro Wilderness Park — a million-acre station with thermal springs, gorges, and river cruises.
Requirements: High-clearance 4WD essential. The road is unsealed and corrugated. River crossings may be required. Open dry season only (approximately May–October). Carry extra fuel, water, and recovery gear.
Route 2: Karijini National Park
Distance: 1,400 km from Perth | Duration: 3–5 days
Karijini in the Pilbara is one of Australia's most spectacular national parks. Ancient gorges, carved over two billion years, plunge into swimming holes of emerald water. Fortescue Falls, Fern Pool, Hancock Gorge, and Weano Gorge are among the park's jaw-dropping attractions.
The main road into Karijini is sealed, but some gorge access roads are unsealed. A 4WD or high-clearance vehicle is recommended for full exploration.
Route 3: Cape Range National Park
Distance: 1,270 km from Perth | Duration: 3–5 days
Cape Range National Park near Exmouth combines gorge walking with world-class reef snorkelling. The gorges on the western side of the cape are ancient limestone formations, while the eastern coast fronts Ningaloo Reef. Yardie Creek gorge cruise reveals ancient rock layers and black-footed rock wallabies.
