Driving Tips
Tasmania has excellent roads but they're often single lane outside towns — allow extra time for slower vehicles and logging trucks. Speed limits are strictly enforced (110km/h max on highways). Watch for wildlife, especially wombats, wallabies, and Tasmanian devils at dawn and dusk — Tasmania has one of Australia's highest wildlife road-kill rates. Mountain roads to Cradle Mountain can be winding and narrow. Chains may be required in winter (June–August) for mountain passes.

Picking up your van
- Launceston has a smaller selection of depots than Hobart, but Apollo, Britz and Maui all operate near Launceston Airport, about 15 minutes south of the city. Autorent Hertz also offers campervans locally.
- One-way hire between Launceston and Hobart is common and usually incurs a modest relocation fee ($50–$150). This lets you do a one-way island loop — pick up in Launceston, drive the east or west coast, drop off in Hobart, and fly out.
- Launceston is a good starting point if you are arriving on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry at Devonport (just an hour's drive west). Some brands will even let you collect at Devonport and drop at Launceston or Hobart.
Driving around Launceston
- Northern Tasmania has excellent sealed roads between major towns. The Bass Highway (Devonport to Launceston) and the East Tamar Highway are both easy campervan drives.
- Roads heading to Cradle Mountain from the north (via Sheffield) are narrow and winding, particularly the last 30km. A 4-berth campervan fits fine, but allow extra time and watch for logging trucks.
- The northeast (St Helens, Bay of Fires, Scottsdale) has quieter roads with less traffic than the east coast south of Bicheno. It is excellent campervan territory.
- Speed limits in Tasmania are strictly enforced with mobile cameras. The default rural limit is 100km/h but many secondary roads are signed at 80km/h because of bends.
Where you can camp
- BIG4 Launceston Holiday Park and Treasure Island Caravan Park (on the Tamar River) are the best options close to town for a first or last night.
- The Tamar Valley north of Launceston has several scenic campgrounds. Further afield, the Bay of Fires and Coles Bay (Freycinet) have excellent national park camping — book ahead in summer.
- Tasmania's Parks Pass ($40 per vehicle for 8 weeks) covers entry to all national parks and is essential. Buy it at the first park gate or online before you arrive.
