How far is the Coromandel from Auckland by campervan?

It's about 1.5–2 hours from Auckland to Thames, the gateway town at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, and around 2.5–3 hours to the east-coast beach towns of Whitianga and Hahei. It makes an ideal 3–5 day loop from Auckland.

When can you dig at Hot Water Beach?

Hot Water Beach works around 2 hours either side of LOW tide, when the hot springs beneath the sand are exposed. Check the tide times, bring or hire a spade, and dig your own natural hot pool in the sand. At high tide the spot is underwater.

Can you drive a campervan to Cathedral Cove?

You can't drive to Cathedral Cove itself — it's reached by a ~45-minute clifftop walk from Hahei, by water taxi, or by kayak. Park your campervan at the designated Hahei park-and-ride or in Hahei village. Always check for any current track closures before you go, as the area has had storm-damage repairs.

The North Island's Classic Beach Escape

Just a couple of hours from Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula is where Aucklanders go to unwind — a rugged spine of forested hills fringed by golden beaches, secluded coves and pohutukawa-lined bays. It packs an enormous amount of coastline into a compact loop, making it one of the best short campervan trips in the North Island.

The appeal is variety at close range: dig a hot pool in the sand at dawn, kayak to a hidden beach by lunch, and watch the sun set over the Firth of Thames from a clifftop campground. Pick up a campervan in Auckland and you can be on a Coromandel beach by early afternoon.

Auckland to Thames: The Gateway

Head south-east from Auckland to Thames, the historic gold-mining town at the base of the peninsula (1.5–2 hours). Stock up here — supermarkets and fuel get sparse further north. From Thames, the coastal road up the western side hugs the Firth of Thames, with plenty of pull-offs to watch wading birds and, in December, the pohutukawa trees blazing red (New Zealand's “native Christmas tree”).

Coromandel Town & the 309 Road

Coromandel Town is a laid-back village of craft galleries, cafés and a famous smoked-mussel scene. From here, the unsealed but campervan-friendly 309 Road cuts across the peninsula to the east coast, passing the Waiau Falls and a magical grove of ancient kauri trees on a short boardwalk. (Check your rental agreement — some companies restrict unsealed roads; the sealed SH25 coastal route is the alternative.)

Cathedral Cove & Hahei

Cathedral Cove (Te Whanganui-A-Hei) is the Coromandel's iconic sight — a giant stone archway linking two white-sand beaches, backed by pohutukawa and towering cliffs. Reach it via the clifftop walk from Hahei (~45 minutes each way), by kayak, or by water taxi. Kayaking is the standout: Cathedral Cove Kayaks runs guided paddles (from around NZ$135) into sea caves and past blowholes to the arch itself. Always check for current track or access closures before you set out.

Where to camp: Hahei Holiday Resort sits right on the beach; Hot Water Beach Top 10 is minutes from the hot sands.

Hot Water Beach

A few minutes south of Hahei, Hot Water Beach is a genuine natural wonder. For about two hours either side of low tide, geothermal springs bubble up beneath the sand — grab a spade (hire one from the café across the road), dig your own pool, and soak in warm water with the surf just metres away. Get the tide timing right; it's the whole experience.

Whitianga & Mercury Bay

Whitianga is the peninsula's main east-coast hub, sitting on beautiful Mercury Bay. Take the tiny passenger ferry across the harbour to walk to Shakespeare Cliff and Lonely Bay, book a boat tour to the sea caves and Te Whanganui-A-Hei marine reserve, or simply enjoy the relaxed cafe-and-beach vibe. It's a great base for a rest day.

New Chums & the Far North Beaches

For those willing to work for it, New Chums Beach (near Whangapoua) is regularly rated one of the world's best undeveloped beaches — reached only by a 30–40 minute walk over a headland, with no buildings in sight. It's the perfect final stop before looping back toward Auckland.

Practical Tips

Book campgrounds in summer. The Coromandel is Auckland's playground — December to February sites fill fast, especially around New Year.
Mind the roads. SH25 is winding and narrow in places; take it slow in a larger motorhome and use pull-offs to let locals pass.
