Two Cities, One Epic Drive
The Melbourne to Adelaide road trip is one of Australia's classic inter-city drives. The scenic route via the Great Ocean Road transforms a simple A-to-B journey into an extraordinary adventure through some of Australia's most iconic landscapes.
Days 1–3: Melbourne to Warrnambool via Great Ocean Road
Follow our Great Ocean Road itinerary from Melbourne through Torquay, Lorne, Apollo Bay, and the Twelve Apostles. This section alone justifies the whole trip.
Continue past the Twelve Apostles to Warrnambool, a large coastal town known for whale watching (June–September) when southern right whales calve in the shallow waters of Logans Beach.
Day 4: Volcanic Western District
Distance: 200 km | Drive Time: 2.5 hours
Head inland through the Western District volcanic country — a landscape of crater lakes, stone walls, and rolling green farmland. Stop at Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve near Warrnambool to see emus, koalas, and kangaroos in a volcanic crater setting.
Drive through Hamilton and Mount Gambier (just across the SA border), where the stunning Blue Lake changes colour from grey to vivid cobalt blue each November. Nearby, Umpherston Sinkhole is a sunken garden in a collapsed limestone cave — free to visit and beautiful.
Days 5–6: The Coorong to Adelaide
Distance: 350 km | Drive Time: 4 hours
The Coorong National Park is a 130 km stretch of coastal lagoons and sand dunes that feels like the end of the world. Walk the beach, kayak the lagoons, and watch for pelicans and migratory shorebirds. This is the landscape that inspired the film Storm Boy.
Continue north to Adelaide, arriving through the rolling hills of the Adelaide Hills or via the Barossa Valley wine region.
