Kelowna: The Heart of Wine Country

Kelowna is the Okanagan's main city and the hub of BC's wine industry. Over 40 wineries are within a short drive, from big names like Mission Hill to small-batch producers in the hills. Beyond wine, cycle the historic Myra Canyon Trestles, paddleboard on Okanagan Lake, or just hit the city beach. Bear Creek Provincial Park, just west of town, is one of the best lakeside campgrounds in the valley.

Penticton & the Naramata Bench

Nestled between two lakes, Penticton is a beach town with a laid-back vibe. The Naramata Bench — a narrow bench of land along the east shore of Okanagan Lake — is home to 30+ boutique wineries connected by a scenic road that's ideal for a day of tasting (arrange a shuttle or designate a driver). In summer, float the channel between Okanagan and Skaha Lakes on a tube — a Penticton institution.

Osoyoos: Where Canada Meets the Desert

At the valley's southern tip, Osoyoos feels more like Arizona than BC. Canada's warmest freshwater lake, near-desert with pocket desert and rattlesnakes, and some of the country's best red wines. Visit the NK'Mip Desert Cultural Centre to learn about the unique ecosystem, then spend the afternoon in the lake.

Tips for an Okanagan Trip

Designate a Driver

BC's impaired-driving laws are strict and well-enforced. If you want to taste at multiple wineries, use a local shuttle service or save the tasting for your non-driving day.

Book Lakeside Campsites Early

Provincial park campgrounds on the lakeshore fill quickly for summer weekends. Reserve through BC Parks as early as possible, or consider midweek travel for easier availability.

Combine With the Rockies

From the Okanagan you can carry on east to Revelstoke and the Canadian Rockies, or loop back to Vancouver via the scenic Coquihalla Highway. It makes for a brilliant two-week combo trip.
