The Route: Austin → Hill Country → Big Bend → Marfa
Days 1–3: Austin & the Heart of Hill Country
Pick up your RV in Austin (or Dallas/Houston for a longer loop) and head into the Hill Country.
- Austin — Live music on 6th Street, Barton Springs Pool (natural spring-fed swimming in the heart of the city), and legendary BBQ (Franklin Barbecue, la Barbecue, Micklethwait).
- Fredericksburg — Charming German-heritage town with 50+ tasting rooms on Main Street. Camp at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park ($25–$35/night) or Enchanted Rock State Natural Area ($20/night).
- Enchanted Rock — Massive pink granite dome rising from the Hill Country. Hike to the summit for 360° views. Camp inside the park (book months ahead).
- Wildflower drives (spring): Willow City Loop and Highway 16 south of Fredericksburg are the best bluebonnet roads.
Days 4–5: Swimming Holes & BBQ Trail
- Hamilton Pool Preserve — Stunning natural grotto with a 50-ft waterfall into a jade pool (reservation required).
- Garner State Park — Float the crystal-clear Frio River. RV sites ($20–$30/night) book out weeks ahead in summer.
- Lockhart — "BBQ Capital of Texas." Kreuz Market, Smitty's Market, and Black's Barbecue are all within walking distance. Meat sweats guaranteed.
- Luckenbach — Legendary tiny "town" (population: 3) famous for the Willie Nelson song. Live music under the oaks every weekend.
Days 6–9: Big Bend National Park
Head west into the vast emptiness of West Texas and Big Bend National Park — where the Chisos Mountains rise from the Chihuahuan Desert and the Rio Grande carves dramatic canyons along the Mexican border.
- Rio Grande Village — Full-hookup RV sites ($16/night) right by the river. Watch the sun set over the Sierra del Carmen mountains in Mexico.
- Must-do: Santa Elena Canyon Trail (1.7 miles, easy — walk between 1,500ft canyon walls), Lost Mine Trail (4.8 miles, best panoramic views), and the Window Trail (5.6 miles, sunset through the "window" in the Chisos Mountains).
- Hot springs: Soak in the natural hot springs beside the Rio Grande (free, short trail from the road).
- Stargazing: Big Bend has the least light pollution of any US national park. The Milky Way here is life-changing.
Days 10–12: Marfa & West Texas
- Marfa — Tiny art-world desert town famous for the Chinati Foundation (Donald Judd's minimalist installations), Prada Marfa (roadside art), and the mysterious Marfa Lights.
- Fort Davis — McDonald Observatory stargazing programs ($8–$12). Davis Mountains State Park has excellent RV sites ($18–$25/night).
