The Cabot Trail: Canada's East Coast Masterpiece
While the Rockies get the headlines, Canada's east coast hides one of the country's most beautiful drives: the Cabot Trail, a 300 km loop around the highlands and Atlantic cliffs of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. Start at Baddeck
Most loops begin and end in Baddeck, a pretty village on the Bras d'Or Lake and once home to inventor Alexander Graham Bell. Stock up on groceries and fuel here — services thin out on the trail itself. From Baddeck you can go clockwise or counter-clockwise; a larger van feels more relaxed going clockwise on the inside lane.
Chéticamp & the National Park
On the west side, Chéticamp is a lively Acadian fishing village and the western gateway to Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Its national-park campground is a favourite base, and whale-watching tours head out into the Gulf of St. Lawrence to spot pilot and minke whales. Don't miss the roadside lookouts as the highway climbs French Mountain into the park.
The Skyline Trail
The park's signature walk, the Skyline Trail, is an easy 7 km loop to a headland boardwalk with sweeping views of the coast far below — often with whales offshore and moose in the meadows at dusk. It's the single best short hike on the Cabot Trail and shouldn't be missed.
Ingonish & the East Coast
Rounding to the Atlantic side, Ingonish offers sandy beaches, the famous Highlands Links golf course, and Broad Cove campground. This eastern stretch has some of the most dramatic cliff-edge driving of the whole loop as you cross Cape Smokey.

Time It for Autumn (If You Can)

Fuel and Groceries
Fill up in Baddeck, Chéticamp and Ingonish — long stretches of the trail have no services. Carry water, as some park campgrounds are basic.
Book Park Campgrounds
Chéticamp and Broad Cove sites book up through Parks Canada. A Parks Canada pass is required to enter Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
