Cairns: Waterfall Paradise
Tropical North Queensland receives some of the highest rainfall in Australia, feeding hundreds of waterfalls that cascade through ancient rainforest into crystal-clear swimming holes. For campervan travellers based in Cairns, these waterfalls make perfect day trip destinations.
Crystal Cascades
Distance: 20 km | Drive Time: 25 minutes from Cairns
The closest major waterfall to Cairns, Crystal Cascades is a series of swimming holes surrounded by tropical rainforest. The main pool is deep enough for jumping from the rocks (at your own risk) and beautifully cool on hot tropical days. The short walk from the car park passes through rainforest alive with butterflies.
Tip: Arrive early — this is Cairns locals' favourite swimming spot and gets busy by mid-morning on weekends.
Josephine Falls
Distance: 75 km | Drive Time: 1 hour south
Josephine Falls tumbles down smooth granite rocks in the shadow of Queensland's highest mountain, Mount Bartle Frere. The lower swimming hole is safe for swimming, and local kids use the smooth rocks as natural water slides. The surrounding wet tropics rainforest is magnificent.
Safety note: Do NOT climb above the safety barriers. The upper falls are extremely dangerous with strong currents and submerged rocks. Several people have died here — stay in the designated lower swimming area.
Millaa Millaa Falls & the Waterfall Circuit
Distance: 130 km | Drive Time: 1.5 hours
The Millaa Millaa Falls is Queensland's most photographed waterfall — a picture-perfect curtain of water dropping into a circular swimming pool surrounded by tropical vegetation. The Waterfall Circuit on the Atherton Tablelands links Millaa Millaa with Zillie Falls and Ellinjaa Falls in a 16 km loop.
The Atherton Tablelands are a natural playground for campervan travellers — combine the waterfall circuit with visits to Lake Eacham (volcanic crater lake), Curtain Fig Tree, and the charming village of Yungaburra where platypus are regularly spotted in Peterson Creek.
Wallaman Falls
Distance: 170 km | Drive Time: 2 hours south
Wallaman Falls is Australia's tallest single-drop waterfall, plunging 268 metres into the valley below. The lookout provides a jaw-dropping view of the falls and the surrounding Wet Tropics rainforest. A steep walking track descends to the base of the falls for a dramatically different perspective.
Camping: There's a basic campground at Wallaman Falls managed by QPWS (book online). The setting is spectacular — waking up in the rainforest to the sound of the falls.
Getting There by Campervan
All of these waterfalls are accessible by sealed roads suitable for standard campervans. The drive up the Palmerston Highway or Gillies Highway to the Atherton Tablelands involves steep, winding mountain roads — take your time and use low gear on descents. Allow a full day for the Tablelands waterfall circuit.
