Cairns: Australia's Waterfall Paradise

Tropical North Queensland receives some of the highest rainfall in Australia โ€” up to 8 metres per year in some areas โ€” feeding hundreds of waterfalls that cascade through ancient rainforest into crystal-clear swimming holes. For campervan travellers based in Cairns, these waterfalls make perfect day trip destinations, and you can visit several in a single day.

The waterfalls here are unique because of the World Heritage Wet Tropics Rainforest they flow through โ€” a 180-million-year-old ecosystem that's home to species found nowhere else on Earth. Swimming beneath a waterfall surrounded by ancient rainforest, with ulysses butterflies drifting past, is a quintessential Tropical North Queensland experience.

Crystal Cascades

Distance: 20 km | Drive Time: 25 minutes from Cairns

The closest major waterfall to Cairns, Crystal Cascades is a series of tiered swimming holes surrounded by tropical rainforest. The main pool is deep enough for jumping from the rocks (at your own risk) and beautifully cool on hot tropical days โ€” the water temperature sits around 22โ€“24ยฐC year-round. The short 600-metre walk from the car park passes through rainforest alive with butterflies, and Cairns birdwing butterflies (Australia's largest) are regularly spotted here.

Tip: Arrive early (before 9am) โ€” this is Cairns locals' favourite swimming spot and gets busy by mid-morning on weekends. The car park fills quickly on public holidays. There are BBQ facilities and picnic tables near the car park.

Good to know: Crystal Cascades is freshwater and croc-free, unlike coastal waterways. However, check for any signage at the entrance โ€” the pools occasionally close after heavy rain when water levels rise.

Josephine Falls

Distance: 75 km | Drive Time: 1 hour south

Josephine Falls tumbles down smooth granite rocks in the shadow of Queensland's highest mountain, Mount Bartle Frere (1,622 m). The lower swimming hole is safe for swimming, and local kids use the smooth granite boulders as natural water slides โ€” the rock is so polished by water that you can slide down without any equipment. The surrounding wet tropics rainforest is magnificent, with massive fan palms and towering kauri pines.

The walk from the car park is an easy 600-metre boardwalk through pristine rainforest. There are two main swimming areas โ€” the lower rock slides and the pool at the base of the main falls.

Safety note: Do NOT climb above the safety barriers. The upper falls are extremely dangerous with strong currents and submerged rocks. Several people have died here โ€” stay in the designated lower swimming area. After heavy rain, the water turns chocolate brown and swimming is not recommended.

Millaa Millaa Falls & the Waterfall Circuit

Distance: 130 km | Drive Time: 1.5 hours

The Millaa Millaa Falls is Queensland's most photographed waterfall โ€” a picture-perfect 18-metre curtain of water dropping into a circular swimming pool surrounded by tropical vegetation. It's the waterfall you see on postcards and shampoo commercials. The swimming hole at the base is deep, cool, and safe โ€” swimming here while the falls cascade onto your shoulders is unforgettable.

The Waterfall Circuit on the Atherton Tablelands links Millaa Millaa with Zillie Falls (best viewed from the lookout โ€” no swimming) and Ellinjaa Falls (cascading over basalt columns into a lovely swimming hole) in a 16 km loop drive. All three falls are signposted and easy to access.

The Atherton Tablelands are a natural playground for campervan travellers โ€” combine the waterfall circuit with visits to Lake Eacham (a volcanic crater lake formed 10,000 years ago with crystal-clear water), the Curtain Fig Tree (a massive strangler fig with 15-metre aerial root curtains), and the charming village of Yungaburra where platypus are regularly spotted in Peterson Creek at dawn.

Tablelands bonus: The area is also home to Dinner Falls (a hidden gem near Millaa Millaa with fewer tourists), Nandroya Falls (a spectacular double waterfall reached via a 5.8 km return walk through pristine rainforest), and Mungalli Falls (visit the adjacent Mungalli Creek Dairy for incredible biodynamic cheese and ice cream).

Wallaman Falls

Distance: 170 km | Drive Time: 2 hours south

Wallaman Falls is Australia's tallest single-drop waterfall, plunging an extraordinary 268 metres into the valley below โ€” taller than Sydney Tower. The lookout at the top provides a jaw-dropping view of the falls and the surrounding Wet Tropics rainforest stretching to the coast. On clear days, you can see Hinchinbrook Island in the distance.

A steep but well-maintained walking track (3.2 km return, allow 2 hours) descends to the base of the falls through dense rainforest. At the bottom, the mist from the falls creates a permanent rainbow in the morning sunlight, and the pool at the base is a humbling place to stand.

Camping: There's a basic campground at Wallaman Falls managed by QPWS ($6.85/person/night, book online). The setting is spectacular โ€” waking up in the rainforest to the sound of the falls echoing through the valley. Facilities include toilets and picnic tables but no showers.

Hidden Gem Waterfalls

Beyond the well-known falls, TNQ has dozens of lesser-visited waterfalls worth seeking out:

  • Stoney Creek Falls (Barron Gorge) โ€” Visible from the Kuranda Scenic Railway, but you can also hike to the base (1.2 km, steep). Just 15 minutes from Cairns.
  • Davies Creek Falls โ€” 45 minutes west of Cairns, a wide cascade over granite rocks with a large swimming hole. Excellent bush camping at Davies Creek National Park.
  • Dinner Falls โ€” Near Millaa Millaa but far less crowded. A peaceful single-drop waterfall with a small swimming hole surrounded by ferns.
  • Tchupala Falls & Wallicher Falls โ€” On the Palmerston Highway between Innisfail and the Tablelands. A beautiful 1.5 km walk through lowland rainforest links both falls.
  • Nandroya Falls โ€” A spectacular double waterfall in Wooroonooran National Park, reached via a 5.8 km return walk. Fewer visitors, exceptional rainforest, and a magical atmosphere.

Waterfall Tours & More

If you'd rather have a guide show you the best spots (and handle the driving on those winding mountain roads), several operators run dedicated waterfall day tours from Cairns. These typically cover Millaa Millaa, Josephine Falls, and several hidden gems, with lunch included.

Getting There by Campervan

All of these waterfalls are accessible by sealed roads suitable for standard campervans. The drive up the Palmerston Highway (from Innisfail) or Gillies Highway (from Gordonvale) to the Atherton Tablelands involves steep, winding mountain roads with tight switchbacks โ€” take your time, use low gear on descents, and pull over to let faster traffic pass.

Allow a full day for the Tablelands waterfall circuit. Crystal Cascades and Stoney Creek are easy half-day trips from Cairns. Wallaman Falls is best as an overnight camping trip due to the longer drive.

Parking: Most waterfall car parks can accommodate campervans, though larger motorhomes (over 7 metres) may find the Josephine Falls car park tight. Crystal Cascades has a large car park with no size restrictions.
