The Savannah Way: Australia's Adventure Highway

The Cairns to Darwin road trip is one of Australia's great outback adventures. Spanning 2,700 km across the tropical top end, this route takes you through ancient gorges, Aboriginal country, natural hot springs, and some of the most remote pubs in Australia. It's a journey that transforms your understanding of this continent's scale and beauty.

There are two main routes: the sealed highway route (via Townsville, Charters Towers, and the Stuart Highway) which is suitable for all vehicles, and the Savannah Way — a more adventurous route through the Gulf Country that requires high clearance or 4WD for some sections.

Quick Facts: Distance: 2,700 km | Driving Time: 30+ hours | Recommended: 10–14 days | Best Season: May–September | 4WD recommended for Savannah Way sections

Section 1: Cairns to Atherton Tablelands

Distance: 90 km | Drive Time: 1.5 hours

Begin by climbing from the tropical coast into the Atherton Tablelands — a fertile highland plateau with waterfalls, crater lakes, and charming farming towns. Stop at Millaa Millaa Falls (the iconic waterfall from every Herbal Essences ad), swim in Lake Eacham (a volcanic crater lake), and visit the quirky Curtain Fig Tree.

The drive up the Gillies Highway is dramatic — hairpin bends through dense rainforest. Take it slow in a larger vehicle.

Section 2: Undara Lava Tubes

Distance: 280 km from Cairns | Drive Time: 3.5 hours

The Undara Lava Tubes are a geological marvel — one of the longest lava tube systems in the world, formed 190,000 years ago. Join a guided tour to walk through the tubes, home to colonies of insectivorous bats and unique cave-adapted wildlife. The Undara Experience lodge offers camping sites in restored railway carriages.

Section 3: Gulf Savannah Country

Distance: 600 km | Drive Time: 7 hours

Cross into the Gulf Country — vast, flat, and stunningly beautiful in its emptiness. The town of Georgetown has a fascinating geological museum, while Croydon is a former gold rush town with heritage buildings and a genuine outback pub atmosphere.

Normanton, on the Norman River, is famous for the 8.6-metre replica of "Krys the Croc" — the largest crocodile ever captured in Australia. Take the iconic Gulflander train from Normanton to Critters Camp for a unique outback experience.

Section 4: Katherine & Nitmiluk Gorge

Distance: 1,200 km from Gulf Country | Drive Time: 14 hours (over several days)

Approaching the Northern Territory, Katherine is the gateway to Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge — a series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River. Canoe or boat through the gorges at sunrise for an unforgettable experience. Aboriginal rock art and freshwater crocodiles are common sights.

Nearby, Mataranka has natural thermal springs — soak in the warm water beneath palm trees at Bitter Springs or Mataranka Thermal Pool.

Section 5: Arrival in Darwin

Distance: 310 km from Katherine | Drive Time: 3.5 hours

The final stretch on the Stuart Highway takes you into Darwin — Australia's tropical capital. Celebrate your epic crossing with sunset beers at the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets. From Darwin, you can explore Kakadu National Park or continue south on the Stuart Highway to Alice Springs.
