The Otago Peninsula
Just 30 minutes from the city centre, the Otago Peninsula is a wildlife hotspot:

- Penguins: Yellow-eyed (hoiho) and little blue penguins along the beaches.
- Seals & sea lions: Regularly seen at Sandfly Bay and Allans Beach.

The Catlins
South of Dunedin, the Catlins coast is one of the South Island's hidden gems — Nugget Point lighthouse, Purakaunui Falls, Cathedral Caves, and more penguins and seals. It links Dunedin toward Invercargill and is a wonderful slow-travel detour.
