Why New Zealand Is a Brit's Dream Van Trip
If Australia is about scale, New Zealand is about density — an absurd amount of world-class scenery packed into a country the size of the UK. In a single day you can drive from rainforest to glacier to alpine pass to empty golden beach. For British travellers it is arguably the most rewarding van destination on the planet, and it pairs perfectly with an Australian leg on the same long-haul trip.
Like home, New Zealand drives on the left, road signs are in English, and the campground and "holiday park" culture is superb. The one adjustment: the roads are narrower and windier than UK motorways, so journeys take longer than the distance suggests — which is fine, because you'll want to stop constantly.

What It Costs (in Pounds)
Hire is priced in New Zealand dollars (NZD, NZ$). At recent exchange rates, roughly:
- 2-berth hitop van: NZ$100–160/day (≈ £47–75)
- Self-contained 4-berth motorhome: NZ$180–300/day (≈ £85–142)
The self-contained premium is worth it if you want to freedom camp — it more than pays for itself over a couple of weeks in saved campground fees. Visas, Licences & the NZeTA
- NZeTA: British travellers don't need a visa for up to 6 months, but must get an NZeTA and pay the IVL tourism levy online before flying. Do this early — it's quick but mandatory.
- Driving licence: Your full UK/Irish photocard licence is valid for up to 12 months and covers all rental vans. No IDP needed as it's in English.
- Working Holiday visa: Available to younger travellers for a longer stay and popular with Brits doing a season.
When to Go
New Zealand's seasons are flipped from the UK, so escaping the British autumn/winter lands you in the Kiwi spring/summer:
- Oct–Nov (spring): Snow-capped peaks, wildflowers, low prices, thin crowds. Our top pick for first-timers.
- Dec–Feb (summer): Warmest, longest days (light past 9:30pm), everything open — but peak prices and you must book vans and DOC campsites well ahead.
- Mar–Apr (autumn): Stunning golden colours around Queenstown and Wanaka, pleasant temperatures, prices dropping.
The Route That Steals the Show
Most UK travellers have 2–3 weeks and rightly prioritise the South Island. Our 14-day South Island itinerary loops from Christchurch through the Southern Alps, the West Coast glaciers, Wanaka, Queenstown and Milford Sound — the greatest concentration of scenery per kilometre anywhere on earth.
Pick up in Queenstown or Christchurch for the South Island, or Auckland for a North Island loop. If you want both islands, factor in the Cook Strait ferry between Wellington and Picton (vans travel on it easily).
Freedom Camping — Do It Right
Freedom camping is one of the joys of a Kiwi van trip, but rules have tightened. In most areas you now need a certified self-contained vehicle (onboard toilet + Green Self-Containment card) to stay overnight for free.
