How far is Christchurch to Dunedin?

The route down State Highway 1

State Highway 1 hugs the coast and the Canterbury Plains most of the way — flat, easy driving in any campervan.

Christchurch → Timaru (165 km): A good halfway point with a sheltered beach, Victorian streetscape and holiday parks.
Timaru → Oamaru (85 km): Oamaru's Victorian Precinct is a highlight — grand limestone buildings, steampunk culture and a little blue penguin colony that comes ashore at dusk.
Oamaru → Moeraki (40 km): The famous Moeraki Boulders — huge spherical rocks scattered along the beach, best at low tide. The nearby Fleur's Place is a renowned seafood stop.
Moeraki → Dunedin (75 km): Roll into Dunedin, gateway to the wildlife-rich Otago Peninsula.

Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula

Dunedin rewards a couple of days. Wander its Victorian and Edwardian architecture, brave the world's steepest street (Baldwin Street), and drive out onto the Otago Peninsula for albatross, sea lions and yellow-eyed penguins. It is one of the best places for accessible wildlife in New Zealand.

There are holiday parks with powered sites at Timaru, Oamaru, Moeraki/Hampden and in and around Dunedin. Book ahead over the October–April peak. As always on the South Island, freedom camping is regulated — use designated sites and self-contained rules where they apply.
