The Cook Strait ferry from Wellington to Picton is the crucial link between New Zealand's North and South Islands — and one of the most scenic ferry crossings in the world. This guide covers how to take a campervan across, what it costs, how to book, and what to expect on the day.
The two operators
Two companies sail Cook Strait: Interislander (from the terminal near Wellington railway station) and Bluebridge (from Waterloo Quay, opposite the railway station). Both carry campervans and motorhomes, run several sailings a day, and take about 3.5 hours. Prices and schedules are similar — compare both for your dates.
Booking a campervan on board
You book vehicle space by length, so measure your campervan (the rental company will tell you). Vehicle fares are much higher than foot-passenger fares, so book as early as you can — sailings sell out weeks ahead over the December–February peak and around public holidays. Choose a daytime sailing if you can, so you can enjoy the scenery.
On the day
- Arrive at the terminal at least 60 minutes before departure with a vehicle.
- Empty any gas bottles' connections as directed and follow crew instructions — you cannot remain in your campervan on the vehicle deck.
- Head up to the passenger lounges; there are cafés, seating and outdoor decks.
- The run out through Wellington Harbour and into the Marlborough Sounds at the Picton end is stunning — be on deck for both.
One-way hire vs taking the van across
Because the vehicle fare is significant, many travellers do a one-way campervan hire — dropping off on one island and picking up a fresh van on the other, crossing themselves as foot passengers.
